Memories and stories continued… • I’ve been Memories and stories continued…
•
I’ve been fortunate to have photographed four no-hitters during my career, but only one perfect game.
•
That would change on a warm and humid July afternoon. The matinee matchup between the Rays and White Sox was breezing right along in typical Mark Buehrle fashion, the Sox ahead thanks to a Josh Fields grand slam. During the fifth inning, I looked up at the scoreboard and realized he had a no-no going and recall thinking “today”? “It’s sooo hot...”
•
The fifth quickly became the seventh as I clicked into “no-hitter” mode, grabbing the lenses I needed, fresh memory cards and batteries, and headed to a seat near the home plate side of the Rays dugout to put myself in position to capture Mark’s last pitch with the scoreboard telling the story in the background. I had concerns that the Rays on deck hitter and/or bat boy might interfere with my line of sight, so I spoke with the batboy after the bottom of the eighth to discuss things. My heart was pounding as Mark delivered pitch after pitch in rapid succession. I could hardly refocus after each pitch!
•
I can’t even imagine how HE felt. This frame of the last pitch of Mark’s masterpiece also ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated that week. History!

There will never be a Spring Training camp quite l There will never be a Spring Training camp quite like White Sox spring training camp in 1994. The White Sox extended a spring training invite to a well known Chicagoan, adding a #45 to the roster. THE #45! The White Sox came into Spring Training as the reigning AL West Champions, but the attention down at Ed Smith complex in Sarasota was focused primarily on a developing future NBA GOAT, Mr. Michael Jordan. The first frame, made with a 600mm lens and un-cropped, was my favorite of Michael that spring. However I do have a memorable moment with Michael that spring I thought I’d share...

•

My NBA photographer friends had tipped me off that Michael, during photo shoots, liked to ask the photographer “You’re a professional photographer, right?” And of course, they would respond “yes”. Michael would then counter with “Well if you’re a professional, you only need one shot”. And often that’s all they’d get. So… I had an idea as I prepared for White Sox photo day. For those unfamiliar with photo day, it’s the day each team sets aside for EVERYONE, (players, coaches, staff) to come through what could be considered an assembly line of photographers and their portable studios to get a headshot taken. It’s nuts, really. Sometimes as many as 60-70 individuals come through the line in typically an hour give or take… challenging to be creative if you as a photographer are trying to capture more than a headshot.

•

Anyway, I was ready as Michael came through the line with Frank Thomas, Robin Ventura and other veteran players. Sure as the sun rises every morning, Michael asked me “You’re a professional photographer, right?” My reply was, “Excuse me, but aren’t you a rookie and shouldn’t I be asking YOU the questions?” Michael laughed good-naturedly… Bingo! Of course, he had that MJ smile and I really only needed one shot, but… mission accomplished. I asked him why he didn’t come thought with the other minor league big league camp invitees around 6am. 🤔🤣😉! It was a fun moment.

1994 White Sox spring training was one to remember indeed!

José – This image of Pito is one of my all-tim José – This image of Pito is one of my all-time favorite images for many reasons… even before his free agent departure to the Astros last week…
•
José was always serious around the ballpark, and with good reason. His career with the @WhiteSox speaks for itself. He was always first one in, last one out so to speak. His commitment to excellence reminded me of another White Sox great, Carlton Fisk. A relentless dedication to excel.
•
Any time we did a photo session together, getting José to smile was always a challenge because on the surface, he seemed to ALWAYS have his game face on! That said, I always made it a point during our photo shoot to look over the top of my camera as I would break into a toothy grin to see if I could tap the “inner José” that I knew existed. ...If only for a moment. 😁 📸 🤪 Without looking through the camera, (having prefocused on his eyes moments before) I was ready for him to drop his guard… SNAP! This portrait captured the José I wanted our fans to see... That of one of the greatest, kindest, and caring players to ever wear a White Sox uniform IMO.
•
José always made sure to ask me how my family was doing whenever we caught up. I will miss him. As much as I hate to admit it, I now have a soft spot for the @AstrosBaseball. Best always to you my friend!

I grew up a White Sox fan. I still have the ticket I grew up a White Sox fan. I still have the ticket stub from the very first game I ever attended. Comiskey Park on August 17, 1963 against the dreaded New York Yankees. Yep, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra versus Nellie Fox, Hoyt Wilhelm, Jim Landis and Joe Horlen. As a kid, I didn’t yet understand that you couldn’t be a White Sox fan AND like the Yankees as well. But what kid didn’t like Mickey Mantle? 🤷‍♂️ My biggest memory from that August day? Nope, not a catching a foul ball or having Juan Pizzaro sign my program… It was eating too many 🌭 and getting a bit as they say under the weather! And that ticket? Purchased at a Sears store, seat location hand written… HAH! Now everything is electronic… pretty sad IMO. Like you can keep your Ticketmaster e-ticket stuffed away in your dresser drawer for 50 years. Memories are fleeting, and harder than ever to look back on these days...

The transition from being a fan in 1963 to covering the team as their Official Team Photographer has been a thrill I'll never forget and will cherish forever. When Steve Lyons made the final putout to close out the incredible history of Old Comiskey Park on September 30, 1990, it closed out a chapter in my own life as well. But that next chapter … 😲

Over the next ten or so weeks I thought it would b Over the next ten or so weeks I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite images (along with a story or two) taken during my 37 year run as the @WhiteSox team photographer... In no particular order, just faves of mine. Thought I'd start with a fellow 1985 rookie; "I like to tell people I broke into “The Show” with the White Sox the same year as a young Venezuelan shortstop who wore #13... Need I say more? Late in September of ’85, I asked Ozzie if he wouldn’t mind posing for a few portraits emulating the poses that the great Chico Carrasquel recorded back in the ‘50s. Early in the morning on the last Sunday game of the season, out walked Ozzie in his full game uniform. Little did anyone know at the time the historical significance these simple portraits would hold."

I was thrilled to be covering my 38th #OpeningDay I was thrilled to be covering my 38th #OpeningDay for the #WhiteSox yesterday! “Semi-Retirement” is exactly that… semi! It was great to see everyone and feel the energy this team has as the 2022 home season kicked off. Fun yet intense… you can feel the emotion in the air! Seems like the perfect combination! And how about that #LuisRobert!! 🔥🔥What a thrill it was to see Harold Baines back as well… If you aren’t aware, Harold underwent a heart and kidney transplant less than a year ago… Thank God for organ donors! …If yesterday was any indication, 2022 is gonna be fun!! 💥⚾️💥

Saddened to hear of the passing of former #WhiteSo Saddened to hear of the passing of former #WhiteSox second baseman Julio “Juice” Cruz today… Arriving in Chicago during June of 1983, Cruz made an immediate and positive impact on that Winning Ugly team. Always full of energy, I don’t know of anyone who didn’t love his enthusiasm and contributions. RIP Juice… and thanks again for the case of hot dogs I won as a fan due to your timely single while I listened to a Sox radio broadcast late one night back in 1983… I believe it was a game against the Mariners… I always found it ironic that you were the “hotdog” 😉responsible for my lifetime supply of 🌭’s … 🙏❤️🙏

A sad day today as one of Baseball’s greatest pe A sad day today as one of Baseball’s greatest people has passed away. Roland Hemond made a lasting, wonderful impression on anyone privileged enough to have met him. My lasting forever moment was in 2005 during our postgame dinner event in Boston following Game 3 of the ALDS. Roland took the floor and passionately reminded all in attendance (team, front office, families and friends) to make sure to “breathe”, to take in what was happening around us… that it was important to do so because if we let ourselves just “immerse ourselves” in our chosen duties, we would miss out on absorbing the moment. Anyone there will never forget that moment, and from that moment on I made sure to stop and “smell the roses”… like looking at the out of town scoreboard prior to Game One of the 2005 World Series and for the first time, I was visually reminded we were THE only game in baseball! 😎Thanks Roland… May you Rest In Peace… 🙏❤️🙏
